Lifetime Leadership
Andre Sochaniwsky
Андрій Соханівський
Since September 2015, Andre Sochaniwsky has been the President of the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada (UWVA) – Українська Стрілецька Громада. Formed in 1928, it is Canada's oldest Ukrainian Canadian veterans' association. Under his leadership, the UWVA revamped its mission to become more relevant to Canada and the Ukrainian community, which has proved very timely considering Russia's military invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It has organized several successful Canadian Armed Forces UNIFIER Appreciation Events, developed a relationship with the Canadian Forces College enabling the organization to better assist Ukrainian officers attending year-long training at this prestigious Canadian institution, and honoured Ukrainian wounded veterans at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, linking elderly Ukrainian Canadian veterans with the new veterans of Ukraine.
In addition to his work with the UWVA, Mr. Sochaniwsky serves on the Remembrance Committee of the Toronto Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and on the Advisory Council of UCC-National, and was previously a Board Director with the Ukrainian Canadian Credit Union Limited for 10 years. He was Project Manager of the documentary film "A Canadian War Story", which recounts the contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to Canada's WWII war effort and how their service shaped our community today. Mr. Sochaniwsky also served (1984–1997) in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Combat Systems Officer, commanding a maritime patrol air crew and representing Canada on international operations.
