Who We Are

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress — Ontario Provincial Council is the voice of Ukrainian Canadians in Ontario.

About UCC-OPC

We unite 9 branches, 11 organized communities, and 9 member organizations under a single coordinating body that advocates to all levels of government, preserves Ukrainian language and culture, mobilizes humanitarian support for Ukraine, and supports Ukrainian newcomers settling in the province.

UCC-OPC is a Not-for-Profit Ontario Corporation, incorporated December 7, 2023, and serves as the provincial arm of the national Ukrainian Canadian Congress (founded 1940).

Our History

Key milestones shaping Ukrainian Canadian life in Ontario — from first arrivals to today's advocacy.

1891

First Ukrainian Immigrants Arrive

The first documented Ukrainian immigrants arrive in Canada on September 7, 1891 — the date later commemorated as Ukrainian Heritage Month each September.

1940

National UCC Founded

Founded November 6–7, 1940 in Winnipeg as the Ukrainian Canadian Committee — the national umbrella uniting Ukrainian Canadian organizations. Renamed Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 1989.

1970s

Provincial Council Formed

Provincial councils were formed across Canada, including the Ontario Provincial Council, to serve regional communities and coordinate local initiatives.

1991

Ukraine Declares Independence

Ukraine's independence transforms UCC-OPC's role — from cultural preservation to building active bridges between Ontario and a sovereign Ukraine.

2022

Full-Scale War & Mobilization

Following Russia's invasion on February 24, UCC-OPC coordinates Ontario's response — launching the CUAET Newcomers' Resource Package, organizing humanitarian aid and settlement services, and hosting the inaugural Trillium Award.

2023

Formal Incorporation

UCC-OPC formally incorporates as a Not-for-Profit Ontario Corporation on December 7, establishing modern governance structures.

2024

Bill 215 Passes

The Ukrainian Heritage Month Act passes the Ontario Legislature on October 29, officially designating September as Ukrainian Heritage Month. UCC-OPC co-led advocacy with MPP Sheref Sabawy.

2025

Inaugural Heritage Month

Ontario celebrates its first Ukrainian Heritage Month in September. UCC-OPC installs an 18′ × 16′ banner in Toronto's Bloor West Village with community banners across the province.
